The Purpose
 According to recent studies, dozens of diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension, and obesity can be prevented by a single prescription. A new collaboration between the AMA and the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) encourages physicians to write this magical prescription for all their patients. Only it's not magic—it's exercise.
That’s why the Dougherty County Medical Society has embraced the RiverFront 5K Run and 1-Mile Walk in Downtown Albany. The race attracts runners from all over the southeast with hundreds of spectators. It brings the community together in overwhelming support of this event, which promotes healthy lifestyles through education and awareness. Through this example, physicians can share with their patients the importance of incorporating physical activity and exercise into their daily routines.
 Proceeds from the 2008 event will go to South Georgia Rails to Trails, Inc., which will ensure that all monies stay in the Southwest Georgia region. The Albany - Sasser - Dawson Rail Trail Project provides a valuable public resource that would not otherwise exist without this successful rail trail conversion. Users will be able to enjoy a safe, continuous recreational trail that will provide excellent opportunities to witness the importance of railroads in the area’s history as well as an abundance of wildlife, lush woodlands and wetland habitats.
